Our inspiration: Bringing history home
SAR Redhen Promotion, born from the inspiring mission of RegionalRail, SAR Redhen Promotions exists to help bring home two South Australian built 1955 Redhen railcars SAR Redhen 311 and 402, currently in Victoria. Grant McDougall’s dedication and journey sparked our determination to support this vital preservation effort.
Every purchase directly supports the return of these magnificent pieces of South Australia’s railway heritage to where they belong.
Bring the Redhens home. Preserve the story. Keep them running for future generations.

Update on the SAR SuperChook Railcars
Potential acquisition: SAR “Superchook” railcar set
Grant McDougall has formally registered interest in acquiring the SAR “Superchook” railcar set that relocated to New South Wales following the closure of the Lions Railway Heritage Society.
A key condition of the acquisition is operational: the Superchooks will be fully serviced and returned to active duty for tourism operations—not stored out of sight.
If the acquisition proceeds, the Superchook set will operate alongside Redhen 311 and 402 on the Northern rail infrastructure north of Gawler and into the Barossa, forming the Barossa Wine Tourist Train.
Why this matters
- Preserved in motion: The goal is heritage that runs, offering authentic SAR experiences rather than static display.
- Regional benefits: Regular tourist services can boost visitation, local spend, and pride in South Australia’s rail story.
- Cohesive fleet: Superchooks and Redhens together provide flexible consists for events, charters, and seasonal services.
Next steps
- Due diligence and condition assessments.
- Service, compliance, and accreditation work to return the set to operational status.
- Partnership building with local councils, tourism bodies, and operators along the Gawler–Barossa corridor.
Support the journey Community and partner support will help move this from interest to operation. Businesses and venues in the Gawler–Barossa region interested in collaborating can get in touch to explore roles in the Barossa Wine Tourist Train initiative.
