Expression of Interest – Former Freight Wagon ALHX 30-X
The former workers carriage AZXF 8174-U, which is currently retained as a static display at the old Freeling Railway Yard, is the subject of an Expression of Interest (EOI) to acquire the carriage for heritage preservation and complete restoration.
AZXF 8174-U is a unique, one-off prototype design and therefore represents a particularly significant and uncommon item of South Australian railway heritage. Its preservation provides an opportunity to retain a surviving example of a carriage that would otherwise be at risk of being permanently lost.
The intention of the EOI is to undertake the complete restoration of AZXF 8174-U, with the ultimate objective of returning the carriage to an operational condition. Subject to all necessary approvals, heritage requirements, engineering assessments and operational considerations, the longer-term proposal is to incorporate the carriage into the planned operating use of the Gawler to Kapunda railway line and corridor.
The EOI was submitted to and received by the Light Regional Council after I became aware that the carriage may be at risk of being scrapped or otherwise disposed of due to its current condition.
Before submitting the EOI, an inspection of the carriage was undertaken to assess its present condition and to determine whether its preservation and restoration were reasonably achievable. Following that inspection, and within a few days, a formal expression of interest was prepared and submitted to Council.
The formal EOI was submitted and received by the Light Regional Council on 31 August 2026.
The proposal is intended to ensure that AZXF 8174-U is preserved as an operating important and unique part of South Australia's railway heritage, rather than being lost through deterioration, disposal or scrapping.
Restoration of the carriage would provide an opportunity not only to preserve a rare one-off prototype, but also to return it to a meaningful operational, heritage and educational role within the broader future use of the Gawler–Kapunda railway corridor.
The proposed project would therefore seek to protect the carriage for future generations while, where practicable, allowing the public to experience and appreciate the carriage as a functioning piece of South Australian railway history rather than solely as a static exhibit.
